Wild caught seafood is the real deal, no additives

I recently read about the farmed salmon growers applying for an "organic" rating. I was dismissive and amused since the salmon farmers have a history of using some pretty obnoxious chemicals and additives in their process. That initial thought could be a bit naive. It appears that if you lobby the politicos, miracles might happen. The official US government story line goes like this; The salmon farmers feed only natural products to their fish so they can control exactly what the fish are fed from the time they are hatched to the time they are butchered. That will qualify for the governments definition of what organic means. I wonder how our government can just ignore all the antibiotics, artificial coloring, anabolic steroids, Slice, and last but not least, Malachite Green which are or have been used in the salmon farming process. I'm sorry, but I don't see anything organic at all about these additives.

What's up at Ocean Beauty?

About a week ago the Feds served warrants at three of Ocean Beauty's plants. To date, no one has made the contents of the warrants public. Rumor has it the searches were about some seafood imports by OB. But here is the part I don't get. Three federal agencies were involved in serving the warrants; the FDA, Customs, and Immigration. What does Immigration have to do with the seafood business? Did someone stow away in a van or what? As soon as I find out I will post it.

The Pay Out / Rip Off

I know this blog is supposed to showcase Wild Alaskan Salmon, but this is worthy of a comment.
I finally received my Exxon Qualified Settlement Check. What a joke. After a 20 year war with Exxon and, at the end, our own attorneys I hold this check in my hand and shake my head with disgust. Allow me to make a comparison. I've had better days fishing. We probably should have hired some attorneys to keep an eye on our trial attorneys. They really skewered us on the Crawford Claims Fund offset. And adding more insult to injury, oil is still being found on the beaches and the damage done to people is ongoing.

Exxon Madness

I don't know how many fishermen are out there who have read about their Exxon Qualified Settlement Fund share in the Anchorage Daily News, but If you are as ticked off as I am, you can leave a comment or a question here. I sat on the joint control groups which set up the allocation and distribution matrix, so hopefully I have an answer if you have a question.

The Fish Blog

Wow...we have finally done it. Folks have been saying we should be blogging so here it is. I, the fishwife, shall begin the blog. Long, long ago...okay really about 18 years ago... Davey was set up on a blind date with the older sister of a friend...and well I guess it stuck...leading me into the life of a fish wife. Davey here has been fishing since the ripe age of 14...I think. Let's just say it's been at around 40 years give or take. Our boat F/V Alchemist is a 49 ft.
Delta seiner. Dave fishes in Kodiak for Salmon and Cod and tenders salmon in Bristol Bay. In recent years we have ventured into the wild world of retail to sell some of our own fish under the "Get Wild" trademark.
